About this Audiobook

Two rival PhD students at Cambridge must descend into Hell to rescue their deceased thesis advisor in this dark academia fantasy that blends Dante’s Inferno with academic satire.

Our Curator's Review

At roughly 18 hours and 30 minutes, Katabasis hits the "Goldilocks" zone for audiobook listeners who want immersion, but short enough to finish in a couple of weeks of commuting. If you loved the academic rigour of Babel, this might feel like a more straight-forward fantasy novel. Kuang takes the "Dark Academia" trope literally, sending two rival PhD students into actual Hell to rescue their advisor. It is dense, philosophical, and deeply atmospheric. While it isn't the 50-hour doorstopper some Long Book Club listeners hunt for, the density of ideas per minute makes it feel much weightier. Verdict: A rich, cerebral standalone that offers excellent "re-listen" value for a single credit.

If you're yet to experience the rich, atmospheric worlds created of R.F.
